AMH helps assess ovarian reserve and likely response to ovarian stimulation. It does not measure egg quality or guarantee a natural pregnancy outcome.
Quantity is different from quality
Ovarian reserve describes the remaining egg pool. AMH can contribute information about this reserve and is useful in some fertility-treatment planning. It is not a direct count of every remaining egg.
The American Society for Reproductive Medicine distinguishes reserve markers from egg quality and from reliable prediction of natural conception. A result should not be reduced to a reassuring or alarming fertility “score.”
Why age and the clinical question matter
The same laboratory result can mean different things depending on age, history and the reason for testing. Someone planning fertility treatment may need different interpretation from someone exploring future options without current fertility concerns.
A low result does not by itself establish that natural pregnancy is impossible, and a higher result does not guarantee it. Fertility depends on more than ovarian reserve, including factors that a blood panel does not assess.
AMH timing differs from other hormone tests
AMH is relatively independent of cycle day compared with some other reproductive hormones. FSH and estradiol may need specific timing when used for ovarian-reserve assessment. Hormonal contraception can also affect interpretation of some results.
Confirm instructions for the exact combination ordered. Do not stop hormonal treatment on your own, or assume all tests in a package can be collected on any day simply because one of them can.
Use the result for a focused consultation
Bring cycle details, medicines, prior results and the question you want answered. Ask what the finding changes, whether another investigation is needed and which uncertainties remain.
A fertility-labelled package is not a complete fertility assessment for a person or couple. In the Bio U catalogue, AMH is an optional add-on to eligible packages, not automatically included in the Female Fertility package linked below. Check the current add-on price and discuss any missing examination, imaging or other tests with the clinician.
Common questions
Does AMH measure egg quality?
No. It is mainly used as a marker of ovarian reserve and ovarian response, not egg quality.
Can low AMH prove I cannot conceive naturally?
No. AMH alone cannot make that prediction.
Do FSH and AMH need identical collection timing?
Not necessarily. Follow the instructions for each ordered test.
