A trend is useful only when the measurements are comparable. Keep the original reports, units, dates and laboratory intervals alongside any graph.
Match the measurement before drawing a line
Check the full test name. Free and total thyroid hormones, routine CRP and hsCRP, or a urine albumin concentration and an albumin-creatinine ratio are not equivalent measurements.
Then check units. The same-looking number can mean something different in another unit system. Do not paste unrelated values into one chart simply because the labels look similar.
Laboratory ranges and methods can differ
Reference intervals can vary with the method and population used by the laboratory. MedlinePlus advises using the reporting laboratory’s range and notes that using the same lab can help with tracking over time.
If you change laboratories, retain both source reports and ask about comparability. A change in the colour of a flag can reflect a different interval rather than a meaningful biological change.
Record the circumstances around collection
Fasting status, recent illness, medicines and treatment changes can help explain differences. Note these alongside the collection date rather than trying to remember them months later.
Small fluctuations are not always a meaningful trend. Two or three points deserve interpretation in context; a smooth line or attractive dashboard should not imply a precise prediction of what will happen next.
Use the chart to prepare a better question
Ask what has changed, whether the change is meaningful and what action it warrants. If a result needs repeating, agree on the reason and timing rather than testing frequently just to extend the graph.
The Bio U Health Dashboard is currently a feature preview with fictional data. Its sample trends demonstrate how comparison could look; they are not your records, a diagnosis or a forecast.
Common questions
Can I compare results from different laboratories?
Sometimes, but first check names, methods, units and reference intervals with a clinician.
Does a downward line always mean improvement?
No. Direction has meaning only for the specific marker, context and intended target.
Are Bio U dashboard trends my real results?
The public dashboard is an explicitly labelled fictional feature preview.
